Be
sure to drop your fishing line in the waters while
you’re
out here. The World Record rainbow trout was just pulled
out of these waters in 2007 weighing 43.6 lbs!
When
you’re
not on the lake be sure to visit some of the many
unique attractions in the area. The
intriguing history of the Lake Diefenbaker area has
the potential to satisfy the curiosity in us all! Visit
the Mistusinne Cairn in Elbow and hear about the legend
of the 400-ton boulder as you peer into the same crevices
once filled with ceremonial offerings. Take a glimpse
into the past where early European settlers homesteaded,
by touring an authentic Sod House in the same area.
Explore
the past around the Palliser Regional Park and the
Village of Riverhurst, and listen to the tragic
tale of the Blackfoot massacre, one of the bloodiest
massacres in the province’s history. Learn more
about our early history by visiting the Whitecap Dakota
First Nation, the place where Chief Whitecap led his
people to escape political turmoil in the 1860’s.
Listen
to the Legend of Jack Hitchcock, and see for yourself
what drew him to the Birsay area back in 1903.
Tour Hitchcock’s cabin, and go back in time to
a place where every man had to fend for himself.
Take
a walk on the Skytrail, Canada's Longest Pedestrian
bridge crossing the South Saskatchewan River at Outlook.
This former rail bridge stands 150 feet high and
stretches 3000 feet across the river with amazing
views.
Satisfy
your desire for exploration by seeking out the Beechy
Sand Castles (pictured above), the Sunken Hill,
Snakebite
Coulee, and the Magnesium Sulphate Lake, all in the
Beechy area. These unique features have origins that
are as intriguing as they are beautiful.
Don’t
forget to check out Gardiner Dam before you leave,
it’s the reason Lake Diefenbaker exists
today! Gardiner Dam is one of the world’s
largest earth-filled dams, and is able to discharge
a remarkable
7,500 cubic meters of water per second. That’s
enough water to fill approximately 180 Olympic
sized pools per minute. Take in the visitors centre
located at the Dam open during the summer months.
Let's
highlight the attractions in the region that
are proud supporters of Lake Diefenbaker Tourism.
